While the prospect of relocating is often, well … moving for adults, it is important to consider the impact that a move may have on your children. Although you may be excited about living in a new neighborhood, your young children may be somewhat anxious about making new friends and adapting to a new school in addition to a new home.
To help your kids prepare for the changes, let them know about the move as soon as possible. Let them express their feelings and concerns, if any, about the move and provide them with the reassurance for which they are looking. Encourage them to keep in touch with their schoolmates and friends, being sure to obtain both mailing and e-mail addresses for each of them.
After you have settled into your new home, spend time with your kids, finding fun places to go in the new community and helping them to make new friends. Soon, your new house will start to feel like “home” to them, too!
